Atletico Mineiro, the defending Brasileiro Serie A winners, will welcome Fortaleza to Mineirao on Saturday in an effort to get closer to the top.
In their last four home games, the hosts have won three and drawn one, while their last four away games have seen the visitors triumph three times.
Atletico Mineiro had a four-game losing record before claiming back-to-back wins at home against Flamengo, winning 2-0 in league play just four days before winning 2-1 in the first leg of their Copa do Brasil last-16 matchup on Thursday.
Although Lazaro pulled one back for the visitors in the 80th minute, Atletico held on for the victory and will take a slim lead into the second leg next month. The hosts took the lead in the seventh minute through Hulk, who then added another in the 55th minute.
The current champions, who are now in fourth place and are seven points behind league leaders Palmeiras, will now turn their focus back to the Brasileiro Serie A while still keeping one eye on defending their Copa do Brasil championship.
The Alvinegro dropped points in eight of their first 13 games this season, drawing six and losing two. Last season, they dropped points in 12 league games en route to winning the top-flight. If his team wants to prevent falling further behind the leaders, Mohamed will be anxious to see them put together a strong run of form in the upcoming weeks.
Given that they have defeated Fortaleza four times in the previous five encounters, with at least two goals scored in each triumph, Atletico will be confident of earning all three points on Saturday.
Fortaleza had a fantastic week after beating Ceara at home 2-0 in the first leg of their Copa do Brasil last-16 encounter on Thursday, following up their 1-0 league triumph at home against America Mineiro.
Yago Pikachu scored all three goals in the two games, including a hat trick against Ceara in the second half to give Juan Pablo Vojvoda’s squad a two-goal advantage going into the second leg next month.
Fortaleza moved off the bottom of the table with their second league victory of the year over America Mineiro. There are now five points separating them from safety.
The Lion of the Pici, who finished fourth last season and made history by qualifying for the Copa Libertadores, have had a dismal start to the new season as they have only amassed 10 points from their first 13 games. Fortaleza was third in the standings and had 17 more points at this point in the previous campaign.
Nevertheless, they have momentum going into the match on Saturday thanks to back-to-back victories in their previous two games. Additionally, Vojvoda’s team should have confidence thanks to their 2-1 victory over Atletico Mineiro on the road during their previous league visit to Mineirao in May of last year.
Even though Atletico Mineiro will be favored to win on Saturday, Fortaleza’s recent run of success raises the possibility of a competitive matchup.
However, the home team should have enough talent, particularly in the last third, to leave Belo Horizonte with all three points.
